Chapter 14

TJ blinked his eyes and squinted down at the fuzzy screen of his phone. He had no idea how many drinks he had, but the bar had finally cut him off, taken his keys, and told him to call a ride. Fine. He was trying to do just that, but he couldn’t make out the name on the screen.

“To hell with it.” He tapped the screen until it dialed someone on his recently called list.

“Hello, this is Anna.” A female voice answered the phone. “Hello? You’ve reached Saddles for Hope Programs Office. Can I help you?”

Fuck. “No, worry-I-d-dialed-w-wrong.”

“TJ?”

“Huh? Yeah, that’s me.”

“Are you drunk?”

The phone slipped out of his hands and slid across the floor. TJ turned and leaned out of his chair to pick it up. Instead of grabbing the phone, the floor rushed up to meet his face. “Ughhhh,” he groaned, landing with a thud.

“Hey, sweetie, let me help you.”

He glanced up a pair of long smooth legs, but couldn’t focus his vision enough to bring her face into view. She picked up the phone, and he swung his hand toward it. “No.”

She ignored him and pressed it to her ear. “Hey, TJ is here at the Buffalo Hump and needs a ride. Can you come get him or do I need to call someone else for him?”

God, no! She is talking to Anna. He’d heard Anna’s voice, right?

“Gimme!” he shouted, grasping at the arm of the chair to pull himself off the floor. It didn’t work. The chair flipped, and the metal arm hit him across the cheek. “Fuck!”

“Shit! Erick! Come help him. He can’t get off the floor,” the dancer hollered. “Okay, hon. Thank you,” she spoke into the receiver of his phone before looking back down at him. “TJ, your friend is on her way. She said she’d take you home.”

No. Fuck, no. He shook his head. “Call Nic.”

“Nobody else needs to be called, sugar, Anna said she was on her way.”

One of the Buffalo Hump bouncers grabbed TJ’s arm and hefted him off the floor. He stumbled along beside the man and cringed as they exited the front door in the too-bright sunlight. “Shit.”

“Dude, you should’ve stopped a half-bottle ago.”

He grunted. The guy was right, but at present, he really didn’t care.

The bouncer placed him on a bench in front of the bar. “Stay here, man. Trixie said your friend would be here in a few minutes.”

TJ stared out across the mostly empty parking lot. Every now and then, cars flew down highway 16. He wasn’t sure how much time passed before a big silver pickup truck stopped in front of him. He couldn’t see who was in the cab or any other details. Everything was fuzzy, and the light hurt, making him squint until he couldn’t see much of anything anyway.

A small form outlined by the bright sun approached. “Anna?”

“What the hell are you doing out here? And why the hell did you call me instead of your fiancée?”

His head throbbed, and he grimaced with each lash of her loathsome tone.
